A Message from Gayle

Our hearts have all been touched and saddened over the news since Katrina hit Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. It has been difficult to sit by and watch people suffer in such a way. Many of you have already sent supplies and funds for the victims. I also understand that several will be traveling to Alabama this week to aid in the disaster relief efforts.

While at Sonquest we received a call from the New Orleans area. The Directors of the Red Cross and Homeland Security people have asked Tim Hines to come immediately to the area to take the position of Logistics Resourcing Coordinator. The Whites Ferry Road Church of Christ is also joining this effort. Tim will be coordinating the volunteers and work in the area. He has already flown there today to Baton Rouge to join the effort. He has strong experience from his Andrew efforts and the disaster relief in Honduras this year.

I, too, have been asked by the same group to come and assess the medical needs in Slidel and Mandevile (over the bridge from New Orleans on the Lake.) They are flying me out tomorrow morning. I will be providing medical care in the shelters and hospital in the area. The plan is to coordinate medical volunteers to come to the area to work. This morning the doctors in Slidel were seeing babies while standing in 3 feet of water. There are 75 babies there that have not been able to be evacuated. The medical needs are identical to those in Guyana when David and I traveled there in February because of the contaminated water. I am very familiar with the problems the people will face. We have already been working on getting the medications to the right people.

Please keep us in your prayers while we are working. We hope that many of you here can come and help at different times as the needs arise. I believe my husband Keith and Don Nickens are already making plans to go.

There is no power where we are going and the phones are not working except for text messaging. I am not sure if we will have internet access either. We will try to keep you updated as things progress.

Please be thinking how you can help. We are also looking for ways to house the volunteers as there is no place to put the people who are working there to pass out supplies and provide help. There will also be monetary needs for supplies and support to the people. Pray for wisdom and recourses to be available to meet the needs of the people. You may donate to Torch Missions/Melbourne church of Christ. Tim and I will be sure it gets used for the people in that area.

If you can house people who wish to start a new life or want to volunteer to work or do medical care please email Tom Gilroy, who is the President of IRC (Torch Missions). He will be letting us know so we can plug people in where they are needed.

Thank you in advance for all you are going to do to help.

Serving Him with you,

Gayle Davidson.
